Christopher Nolan Reacts to a Surprising Oppenheimer IMAX Fact appeared on www.cbr.com by CBR.
Filmmaker Christopher Nolan and Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr. have just learned a fascinating new fact about the recently released biopic drama, which has managed to surprise both of them.
Nolan, the director of Oppenheimer, and Downey Jr., who plays Lewis Strauss in the movie, stopped by BBC Radio 1 for a quick chat with Ali Plumb, who had just the trick up his sleeve to blow his interviewees away. The journalist knew the perfect way to stop Nolan in his tracks as he shared an Oppenheimer IMAX fact that the filmmaker had apparently had no idea about. As it turned out, Plumb told his friend, a QI employee and “a big geek,” that the IMAX reel of the film was 11 miles long, and he, in turn, discovered that an average person could walk 11 miles in about three hours. The interviewer came to the simple yet astonishing conclusion that someone could “watch Oppenheimer at the same time as [they could] walk it.”
Plumb seemed excited to extend this knowledge to Nolan and Downey Jr., saying, “I wanted to give that to you!” Their reactions were quite appropriate — both stars chuckled. Nolan thanked the journalist and assured him that he would never forget this information. He jokingly commented, “That will never leave me.”
While Downey Jr. was laughing and poking fun at “the turning of the tables” as he applauded the fact that they “finally got something back from the BBC,” Nolan simply stated, “I don’t quite know what to do with this, but it’s interesting.” Plumb ironically retorted that he would “stick it” in the director’s birthday card. Coincidentally enough, the interview aired on July 27, and Nolan’s actual birthday came just three days later, on July 30, when he turned 53 years old, so the journalist might as well have listed his Oppenheimer IMAX fun fact in the birthday card as teased.
Nolan is known for his scrupulous approach to filming his features, and he usually has a specific reason for every detail in any given scene. Even when the acclaimed director was choosing which Oppenheimer scenes to shoot in IMAX, he did not make this decision lightly, so surprising Nolan with a fact about one of his movies is truly an achievement on the interviewer’s part.
Oppenheimer is playing in theaters now.
