Climate crisis is a national security threat.

Neil Durkee’s letter “Don’t threaten national security with foolhardy climate choices,” Aug. 9, opposing constraints on fossil fuels raises interesting questions about the real threats to our national security.

In fact, if we don’t eliminate fossil fuels, the resulting rise in sea levels will force massive relocation of our coastal populations, fires, floods and crop devastation. Will this make our nation secure? Continued climate change is in fact an enormous threat to our national security.

Regrettably, the current U.S. foreign policy pivot to framing national security as an issue of military rivalry with China and Russia undermines the cooperation needed with both these countries to develop effective global strategies to address the climate crisis.  For example, Nancy Pelosi’s ill-advised visit to Taiwan has had the particularly damaging outcome of undermining much-needed U.S.-China talks on the climate.

And the U.S. policy to date to flood Ukraine with weapons, instead of promoting peace negotiations with Russia, not only has led to enormous destruction and loss of Ukrainian lives, but also U.S. sanctions have led to climate-destructive energy choices and global food shortages. This may be in the self-interest of weapons producers, but it is not in the national interest of us all.

We need to urge our policymakers to put the climate crisis at the top of our national security agenda.
