Conor McGregor snubbed as Dana White discusses UFC’s five greatest fighters with boxing legend Mike Tyson appeared on talksport.com by Jordan Ellis.
Conor McGregor is thought to be Dana White’s favourite fighter.
However, when then UFC president was discussing MMA’s best with boxing legend Mike Tyson, the former dual-weight champion appeared to slip his mind.
McGregor wasn’t the only high-profile person to miss out as Khabib Nurmagomedov, Georges St-Pierre, and Demetrious Johnson also got snubbed by the MMA mogul.
“It’s so hard to do because when you look at the 23 years that I’ve been in it, there’s been so many great fighters. But you gotta start with Jon Jones,” White said on the Hotboxin podcast.
“You gotta have Ronda Rousey, know what I mean? You gotta have Amanda Nunes, greatest female fighter of all time. There’s just so many, it’s hard to pick five.
“Kamaru Usman has got to be in there, Chuck Liddell in his time, Royce [Gracie] in his era, and in his time, it’s hard to just pick five.
“If you look at the different generations, they took the sport to another level.
“Matt Hughes would have to make the list. There’s so many people, it’s tough to pick.”
At the peak of his powers, McGregor won titles at featherweight and lightweight and was the first fighter to hold two belts simultaneously in company history.
The 35-year-old sold millions of pay-per-views during his iconic UFC run that included wins over Jose Aldo, Dustin Poirier, Eddie Alvarez, and Nate Diaz.
By 2017, he had outgrown the sport and was forced to crossover to boxing to make the $100 million payday his star power deserved when he fought Floyd Mayweather.
McGregor suffered a tenth-round TKO defeat against ‘Money’ and has never really looked the same since returning to MMA as he’s suffered defeats to Nurmagomedov and Poirier.
The Irishman, who regards himself as MMA’s greatest-ever fighter, hasn’t fought since breaking his leg during a trilogy bout with ‘The Diamond’ at UFC 264 in July 2021.
Now that he’s fully recovered from a career-threatening setback, McGregor is booked to face Michael Chandler and hopes that fight will lead to more UFC gold.
BMF titleholder Justin Gaethje is a preferred opponent for ‘Mystic Mac’ who has predicted he will one day hold the UFC welterweight title currently owned by Leon Edwards.
Regardless, McGregor will be remembered as a bonified MMA legend.
Even if White doesn’t think he’s among the best to ever compete in the UFC.
