Croatia vs. Japan LIVE appeared on theathletic.com by The Athletic Staff.
Croatia took plenty of risks last time out against Belgium and earned their place in the knockout stage.
They pushed up their full-backs and created a front five in attack. They honed in on the Belgium right, with the evergreen Ivan Perisic dovetailing neatly with Borna Sosa. In short order, Marcelo Brozovic and Luka Modric stung the palms of Thibaut Courtois. Later, Bruno Petkovic stepped off the bench and reinvigorated their attack.
The first half had been abject, but it was Croatia who most wanted to do something about it.
It is why they are likely equipped to go deeper in this competition than the last 16, and were a step up in quality from Belgium. They perhaps lack that cutting edge in the final third, a possible weakness, but they are finely tuned as a team, capable of knitting together clever passing sequences and controlling the momentum of a game.
In 20-year-old Josko Gvardiol, they have an imposing leader at the back. They are getting more out of those ‘older’ players, and that means they will be a tough opponent in the upcoming knockout rounds.
