A reader gives Cyberpunk 2077 a chance on PS4 Pro and finds it to be a surprisingly entertaining experience, despite the lingering bugs.

So, I had the opportunity to get a physical copy of Cyberpunk 2077 at a low price (stranger!) so took the plunge. My expectations were low given I have a PS4 Pro, rather than a current gen machine (or high spec PC), and the historical issues with the title, especially on last gen hardware. Plus, I couldn’t get any real insight online, on how it would now perform on a PS4 Pro, given the amount of patches since launch. But as it was inexpensive I had little to lose – a few quid if I traded it in.

I’m about six or seven hours in (past the lengthy intro/tutorial), have done a few side quests and explored some of the city on foot – something I like to do in all open world games before getting stuck into the main story. And I have to say, I’m very pleasantly surprised. Yeah, the amount of people on the street is lower than in something like GTA 5, and the amount of traffic even lower, I’m assuming this was a compromise to get the thing running at a decent lick, which I’m fine with.

The non-player character count is still immersive enough, although the lack of cars is sometimes noticeable. There’s been the odd glitch, slow down, pop-in, and frame drop but nothing too disconcerting and no hard crashes to date. The graphics are better than I expected, and it runs mostly smoothly.

I’m liking the characters so far and am invested in the story, the gunplay is better than average and the pacing decent (although to be fair you can control that yourself to some extent by how you play the game). I’m still getting used to the different role-playing systems within the game, although it does a decent(-ish) job of explaining some of them organically as you progress.

I wouldn’t put a score on it just now, given I’m just scratching the surface, but initial thoughts would be an 8 or 9 if the quality is retained. I really enjoyed the Deus Ex series of games (are they dead?) which has semi-open world areas but the ambition of this to be truly open world is admirable, and those are the titles I’d probably compare it to the most, with much more in the way of role-playing elements.

So, all in all, a very positive experience, much better than I was expecting. I can’t comment on the base PlayStation 4/Xbox version and how that runs now, but if you’ve got a Pro and have been on the fence about getting it I’d say give it a go if you can get it at a decent price.

I’m loathe to give CD Projekt Red too much credit, as they originally knowingly launched the last gen versions in a terrible state – to such an extent that Sony removed it from their online store – and hid that fact from reviewers/players by only having the PC version available for review. However, they could’ve let these version die a slow death but they’ve sort of done a Hello Games, to a lesser extent, and put a wrong right, so partial credit for that.
