Day 46 – You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling – The Trek appeared on thetrek.co by The Trek.

Today the goal was to eat as much as humanly possible before leaving town. The comedian Louis CK says “the meal is not over when I’m full, the meal is over when I hate myself.” I hated myself at least once today.

Rabbit and I woke up feeling pretty sore after yesterday’s marathon (him more than me). We walked over to the diner for breakfast. I ran into Thomas, my German friend from Munich who I had not seen since the first week or two of hiking. He had caught up after our zeros for Trail Days.

I ate a breakfast burrito, coffee, and chocolate milk. We discovered maple syrup to sweeten coffee is not as terrible as one would imagine. Afterward, we met up with Hatcher and Stanley, and Sip would be in town sometime after 12:00. Rabbit and I packed our belongings and loitered outside the church or another hour or so. Our socks and shoes were layed out on the concrete pathway to dry, while we stretched and yoga’d in the grass. The caretaker seemed less enthused by our lingering.

We had a joyous reunion with Sip outside the diner where we had lunch. My third meal at the diner in the last 18 hours. He told us the story of how he burned his socks trying to dry them out next to the fire last night.  Lunch was a turkey club. At lunch we discovered that Pepsi mixed with Sprite (almost) tastes like Ginger Ale. After lunch we were sufficiently too full to move. We dragged our bags back to the church and laid down under a tree to nap while Sip did laundry and went shopping in town.

Our second round of loitering outside the church was not taken too kindly by the caretaker “Bayou.” He decided it was the perfect time to mow the lawn in that area and effectively chased us off. Walking with full stomachs we started out of town and up the trail.

Dandelion wisps caught in the wind, flutter in the sunlight, across my path as I walk out of town. The walk was intentionally short. Just a mile or so out of town to the first tent site. The weather has been comfortable and partly cloudy all day and is expected to continue for the next week.

At camp I ate the rest of my sandwich I had packed out from lunch, while lounging in rabbits hammock. Our small talk before bed extinguished and I retired to bed a little before 9:00. Rest came easy.

Stow away in my pack for Day 47 on the Appalachian trail.
