Discovering a connection from Guernsey to Guernsey appeared on www.daily-jeff.com by The Daily Jeffersonian.
When planning a trip, it is always a good idea to do a little research on the destination. Scout out good places to eat, where to stay, and most importantly what things there are to do. Alex Dekker, a resident of the Isle of Guernsey in the Channel Islands, was doing just that when we stumbled upon Guernsey County, Ohio, and the city of Cambridge.
Dekker, a young 26-year-old who was born and raised on the island, decided to add Cambridge to his itinerary for his first-ever trip to the United States after discovering it on Wikipedia. “I thought it would be funny in a quirky way and fun to come to a place that was named after where I was from. I quite like to go off the beaten track anyways and this matches those things. I think people, when they visit the states, go to New York, Florida, and California; it’s just going to see places that people don’t usually go to see. Ticking off my road trip bucket list,” Dekker said during his recent visit.
Dekker spent one day in New York, where he saw “Hamilton” and a performance by Billy Joel. He then continued to Dallas, Texarkana, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, and Cincinnati before stopping in Cambridge. When researching online he said he discovered that settlers from the Isle of Guernsey were responsible for settling in Guernsey County and giving us the name.
Many U.S. cities and states are named after places in the United Kingdom. “There are so many places in the British Isles that have places named after them in the U.S. New York comes from York, there’s a lot of Londons, a lot of Birminghams,” noted Dekker. “I previously did not know that this place existed. I think a handful of people that I spoke to on the island had heard of the county and found it in a similar way. It was about a dozen families that came here to settle. In the scheme of island history, that’s not a very big event. I think that happens in a lot of places. So I thought it would be quite interesting to come here because I don’t know anyone who has.”
“If I had to put it in one word, I’d say quaint,” Dekker said of his initial impression of Guernsey Count. “I feel like that’s a good word for it. It’s a nice area, and, compared to other places of a similar size, it feels like there’s quite a bit going on. This place seems to have some life and a community here, which is good.”
While in town, Dekker was able to visit the Dickens Victorian Village Welcome Center, where he was promptly fitted with a Victorian Sherlock Holmes-esque outfit. He also stopped into the Guernsey County Visitors and Convention Bureau for guidance on the area. Rick Booth, a local historian, was able to spend time with Dekker before he checked out the Courthouse Light Show.
“Most of this trip has been by the seat of my pants, really. The only thing that I’ve really known is where I’m staying that night. I’ve kind of just made it up as I’ve gone along,” Dekker said. “It’s a holiday of a lifetime.”
