In a nightmarish video, a health expert has revealed the five body parts that people don’t wash regularly enough – with some not washing them at all.
While jumping in the shower for a quick hose down after a gym session is a good idea, a doctor has warned that it isn’t enough to keep certain areas clean, and that skipping them could cause serious health issues.
Nows, the expert has shared the five body parts that people often skip out when cleaning their bodies.
Taking to her TikTok followers Dr Jen Caudle, a US-based family doctor, has racked up millions of views discussing people’s lack of personal hygiene and the implications. She lists the body parts that are regularly missed when people shower.
Dr Jen says your belly button and ears should be cleaned regularly but probably aren’t, and there is a simple “sniff” test which will allow you to decipher if you have been cleaning thoroughly or not. She adds that rubbing your ear and then smelling your finger would determine if you have been cleaning yourself properly.
Another health professional who spoke to Metro.co.uk, pharmacist Abbas Kanani from Chemist Clerk said: “Your belly button is a bit of an obscure location where moisture can cause a build-up of bacteria. Behind the ears should also be on the list, as sebaceous glands collect sweat and release sebum, causing a build-up of dirt.”
The next area that needs more attention are your nails because of any lingering dirt trapped under them, according to Dr Jen. In her video, she says our nails can be a hotbed for germs which can spread infections and bacteria which can cause illnesses like diarrhoea and vomiting.
If you use X, formerly Twitter, you know washing your legs has been a heated debate for a while, and Dr Jen doubles down, insisting: “I want you to actually wash your legs.”
According to Dr Jen, just letting water run down your legs is not good enough, they actually need to be scrubbed and washed.
The final and most commonly forgotten area when it comes to cleaning your body according to Dr Jen are your toes, which she advises ‘deliberately’ washing. She adds that when it comes to washing the bottom of your feet, it’s not “enough” to simply stand around in a wet shower.
Dr Jen also references the ‘folds’ of skin that need to be lifted to be cleaned, like the skin under skin underneath breasts, tummy rolls and anywhere else that needs to be lifted or moved.
