Don’t threaten national security with foolhardy climate choices.
The headlong rush to eliminate fossil fuels from the energy mix is going to haunt us and result in a strategic error of epic magnitude.
According to a multitude of experts, renewables cannot provide for all of our energy needs. What is going to make up the difference? Not only do fossil fuels power electric generation but they also are vital to the production of hundreds of products. The impact on our health and agricultural sectors as well as our military, all of which depend on fossil fuels, needs to be considered.
It’s critical to incorporate in the mix all forms of energy, including nuclear. Many countries are now moving in that direction. There is no risk-free option. But prematurely destroying a major component of our energy industry will risk our national security and have a terrible impact on low- to moderate-income households. Natural gas, nuclear, hydro and solar/wind should all be included and phased in or out with developments in future technologies.
It’s arguable that in the next several years we will be facing more of a national security crisis than a climate crisis. China is posing a growing threat, North Korea is a dangerous regime, Iran will soon have nuclear weapons, Russia has threatened tactical use of nuclear weapons, and who knows what’s crossing our borders. And the reality is that Russia, China, India and a host of other countries simply cannot afford to move away from fossil fuels.
I hope by 2050 we do achieve good climate results but, in the meantime, national security should come first and all forms of energy employed to protect us.
