Ed Sheeran has recalled how he and Van Morrison shared a hotel breakfast after the young Englishman had been drinking whiskey all night.
On a recent episode of Conan O’Brien’s podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend”, Sheeran told the story about sharing a very early meal with the Belfast man.
The two were talking about Van Morrison’s music, and how much Sheeran loved his album Moondance, which Sheeran believes is a perfect piece of work.

Telling a funny story about the first time Sheeran met the Belfast musician, he said: “He doorstepped me at my hotel. In 2014, I had just made Thinking Out Loud and it had become a hit. And my gran came to a gig, and we had a lot of whiskey afterward, as you do.
“I went to bed at like 4 am, and I got this phone call at like 6 am from the person at the front desk like ‘ Van Morrison is here and he wants to have breakfast with you’.”
“I was like ‘No he’s not’, but he actually was. So I showered and went down, and we had breakfast. It was really surreal because I was still drunk.
“He’s really sweet, I’ve to go meet him a couple of times. He’s one of my heroes. People say don’t meet your heroes, but it was not that sort of thing at all.”
Sheeran has multiple songs about his Irish ancestry, most notably the song Nancy Mulligan, that discusses how his two Irish grandparents met each other.
