Elton John‘s Tear-Jerking Tribute To Kate Garraway And Derek appeared on evoke.ie by EVOKE.
Kate Garraway and her husband Derek ended up having an extra special night at Elton John‘s O2 Arena gig thanks to a touching tribute from the singing legend.
On Monday night Kate and Derek Draper, who became seriously ill after contracting Covid-19, went to see the singer perform as special guests of honour.
After a struggle to even make it to the show in the first place for the couple, which apparently took two weeks of planning to make happen, Elton dedicated his song Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me to them.
Speaking on Smooth Radio, the broadcaster explained how the touching tribute moved both her and her two children Darcey and Billy, to floods of tears.
After Derek struggled to get comfortable in the overwhelming stadium atmosphere ‘shaking’ at one point, Kate took her husband out into the hall for a bit of a breather.
When the Good Morning Britain host asked him if wanted to go home Derek was determined to stay and it was when they returned the big moment happened.
‘It must have been fate as that was the exact moment Elton suddenly dedicated Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me to Derek and his journey,’ she said.
Elton spoke about the family’s struggle since Derek fell ill in 2020 and spent 13 months in hospital, describing them as ‘inspiring’ and adding that he was ‘So thrilled’ that they were there.
It clearly meant a lot to the Garraway-Draper clan as Kate explained: ‘We were all in tears, the kids, Derek and even the nurses. It was completely unexpected.
‘People around us were so lovely and started clapping which was an extraordinary moment we will all treasure forever and Elton made it possible.’
Though the show was a boost for her other half he is still ‘exhausted’ and returned to the hospital to receive further treatment.
