Even Bloodborne 2 Can't Save Sony This Time: Latest Figures Paint a Grim Picture for PS5's Future appeared on fandomwire.com by FandomWire.

When we talk about gaming consoles, there’s no doubt that PlayStation has dominated the market, completely outclassing what Mircosoft has delivered. Usually, it’s quite easy to be confident about Sony’s future, but things have been quite shaky in recent years.

Sony’s strength comes through its brand and the lineup of incredible first-party studios. However, 2023 proved to be an unusually quiet year for Sony’s first-party outfit, with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 being the only significant release. That lull continued into early 2024 with no major releases for PlayStation 5 (PS5). The lack of titles, combined with Sony’s recent profit reports, has certainly raised some questions about the future of PS5 and the organization.

Sony’s Recent Report Is Worrying For The Future of PS5

PS5’s dark future | Sony

Recently, Sony held a business briefing for its investors, revealing a lot about PS5 and its future. Despite the lack of sales, Sony called its latest iteration of the PlayStation console the “most profitable to date.”

According to Sony, the PS5 console has already made as much money in sales as the PS4. However, one of the most interesting revelations was that even after a decade of its life cycle, the PS4 still accounts for half of PlayStation’s player base. Despite the company claiming that players are spending more time and money on PS5, the active player on PS4 clearly suggests something wrong with the console that’s prompting players not to make the jump.

So, why does PS4 still have a greater player base than PS5? One of the many issues with PS5 consoles has been the lack of eye-catching exclusives. You’ll be surprised to know that we’re halfway through this generation cycle, and Sony still hasn’t pumped out enough titles to compel players to switch from PS4. The limited number of PS5 exclusives are also getting PC ports, further decreasing the motivation to get Sony’s latest offering.

The fact that half of PlayStation’s player base is still playing on PS4 pushes developers to downgrade modern titles for the console, which ruins the graphics and several other aspects. Heck, there’s a chance that even Black Ops 6 might release on PS4. Even though Sony has officially abandoned PS4 and is already working on the next generation of consoles, players have no reason to upgrade since they’re still getting new games on older consoles.

Microsoft’s switch to Game and Cloud Gaming has allowed them to deviate from hardware sales. However, Sony’s majority of the revenue still comes from hardware sales. Even hype for titles such as Bloodborne 2 isn’t enough for players to jump to PS5, which is bad for Sony if they’re not able to capitalize on new hardware sales.

Will PlayStation 6 Save Sony From a Dark Future?

Can PS6 save Sony? | Sony

Although PS5’s success is questionable, Sony’s next console, PS6, could save them from the impending doom. It’s been four years since the launch of PS5, and considering Sony’s past releases, we’re likely to see PS6 arrive in 2028.

If Sony wants to avoid repeating the PS5 situation, it must focus on releasing first-party exclusives and pumping out more experimental games, which pull in many players. We can already see how Microsoft is acquiring different studios and creating new ones to prepare a lineup of exclusives for its next Xbox iteration. Sony could follow the same formula and prepare a library of games that makes players instantly jump to PS6 without a second thought.

Another aspect Sony needs to consider regarding PS6’s release is its PlayStation Plus service. It’s a known fact that PlayStation Plus doesn’t compare to Mircosoft’s Game Pass, which is the ultimate deal for gamers. If Sony can improve its service and include more games, people will flock in, allowing the company to rely less on hardware sales.
