Even with bankruptcy filing, here’s how to hold S.F. Archdiocese accountable for abuse appeared on www.sfchronicle.com by sfchronicle.com.
Regarding “S.F. Archdiocese files for bankruptcy amid hundreds of sex abuse lawsuits” (Bay Area, SFChronicle.com, Aug. 21): While the San Francisco Archdiocese may be able to use bankruptcy to avoid financial accountability for sexual abuse cases and their associated coverups, it is unacceptable to use the same approach to avoid moral accountability for its egregious failures to protect young people from predatory priests over many decades.
If the bankruptcy process forecloses on legal processes for uncovering the truth, then legislators must create another pathway for victims to unearth how the archdiocese mishandled their cases.
In the name of safety, the public deserves to know what happened — even if financial redress for the victims is curtailed. It’s the responsibility of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors or the state Legislature to establish a truth and healing commission with powers to subpoena and publicize evidence that may help bring some closure to the survivors of this horrendous abuse.

Climate is everyone’s problem
I’m a sophomore at Hayward Twin Oaks school, and I am writing because there is an issue that affects everybody on this planet: climate change.
The Earth is getting warmer at a faster rate than ever. There are more droughts, heatwaves, storms, melting ice and a fast-rising sea level, all caused by humans. If we don’t do anything about it, climate change will cause 3.4 million deaths per year by the end of the century, according to the Climate Vulnerable Forum.
Every single person needs to be aware of this issue for us to be able to do something about it.
There are many causes for this problem. To stop it, we need the stewardship of the government, corporations and every single person.
The government can make laws to curtail the emission of greenhouse gasses, businesses can work to end climate change and every individual person can be conscious of their own actions.

Vote for Schiff
Rep. Adam Schiff is a proven leader who has earned the trust of Californians by taking on the toughest challenges in service to our state and country.
From fighting for affordable housing and solutions to homelessness, to defending our democracy, to lowering health care costs for working families, to leading efforts to protect our planet from climate change, Schiff has been there for us.
“The Senate is where many of these fights over the future of our democracy take place,” Schiff said in an interview prior to launching his campaign for the Senate seat Dianne Feinstein is vacating. “Some of Donald Trump’s biggest enablers are in the Senate. And I think that is where I can most effectively champion our democratic institutions.”
Schiff has earned my vote and that of my family and friends. Hopefully, his hard work and dedication to improving our lives have earned the support of all Californians.

Expand ferry service
Something has bothered me for a while and renews every time I walk by Oyster Point Marina: The lack of riders at the South San Francisco Ferry Terminal and the lack of imagination by the ferry system’s governing boards to utilize this terminal to its full potential.
The ferry seems to just serve a handful of mostly Genentech workers going back and forth from Oakland. What a waste.
If there were a regular schedule to San Francisco, I’m sure it would serve many more people who work in the city. It would also be a great weekend option for trips to town and even for Giants and Warriors games.
I don’t think most of us on the Peninsula know the South San Francisco ferry exists. Or they know its service is limited.
Someone made a lot of money building that terminal, dredging the harbor to allow access for the ferries. Let’s allow this service to make money, serve the people and help the planet by taking a few cars off the road.
