Ah, Leonardo DiCaprio — a name synonymous with Oscar-winning performances, environmental activism, and, let’s face it, a dating history that becomes increasingly awkward as he ages. Hollywood’s perennial bachelor is infamous for his penchant for dating women who haven’t yet celebrated their 26th birthday. His current girlfriend, 26-year-old Victoria’s Secret model Vittoria Ceretti, finds herself on the cusp his his notorious dating threshold. 

And while there are a host of reasons as to why this could be — the societal expectation that women should remain forever young, the uncomfortable truth that ageism often pressures women into a perpetual youth race or ways to “age with grace,”  — experts and producers close to DiCaprio claim his penchant for dating younger women can be tied to how he came up in the industry. 

Despite his relationship with Ceretti, who has defied expectations by turning 26 and still being in a relationship with DiCaprio for about a year, sources claim he “doesn’t see the point in settling down.” This has only fueled the jokes around Hollywood about “Leo’s Law.” As one insider noted, “Everyone in town jokes about ‘Leo’s Law’ because whenever you see him, he looks older but the women on his arm look exactly the same. They’re usually blonde, always great-looking and half his age. My Tupperware is older than some of his girlfriends!”

Reputation manager Eric Schiffer offered a lens into DiCaprio’s dating patterns by pointing out that, “Leo was a child star who became a superstar with Titanic, which he filmed when he was 21 and came out when he was 23.” Schiffer suggests that many people remain emotionally “stuck” at the age they gained fame. “Leo dated 23-year-olds when he became famous and he’s still dating them today. It smacks of emotional immaturity when a person cannot find deep, meaningful love with someone their own age,” he explained to Daily Mail.

Still, DiCaprio’s early fame doesn’t automatically excuse his dating history. After all, some child stars from that era have managed to date people born in the same decade. Others, like Tobey Maguire, who stood next to Ceretti at DiCaprio’s birthday bash as Stevie Wonder serenaded the crowd, have found themselves in similarly, shall we say, youthful circles. Suggesting DiCaprio is a young man in an older man’s body mirrors how young Gen Z Trump supporters are labeled “lost boys,” feeling at odds with the world and stuck in arrested development as only a few people or notions of people sound attractive to them. Sound familiar?

So while it seems like Ceretti and DiCaprio’s relationship is on solid terms, there are others (and a clear as day dating record) that suggest there’s a predictable expiration date lurking around the corner, much like the rest of his age-defying romances.
