Fact Check: Does video show Bill Clinton booed during recent speech? appeared on www.newsweek.com by Tom Norton.

Bill Clinton‘s association with the late Jeffrey Epstein has been on display following the release of previously sealed court documents detailing the former president’s connection to the disgraced New York financier.

Papers from a lawsuit against Epstein’s fixer, Ghislaine Maxwell, unsealed this month, repeatedly mentioned Clinton, who did not seek to have his name redacted.

The former president has long denied being aware of Epstein’s sex offenses, with his spokesperson reiterating that he cut ties with the financier more than a decade before he took his own life in a New York jail cell.

Clinton has faced intense public scrutiny since, with one viral clip posted online this week appearing to show him being called “a rapist” and booed onstage.

The Claim

A post on X, formerly Twitter, by Wall Street Silver, posted on January 10, 2024, viewed 1.1 million times, included a video of Bill Clinton saying “Nobody can dispute the fact” before someone out of shot appears to say “That you’re a rapist.” Booes can be heard from the background with Clinton appearing to respond “Oh yeh?”

Wall Street Silver wrote: “Too Good ? ? ????

Bill Clinton is having to deal with comments from the crowd.

“Listen carefully. ?”

The Facts

The video of Clinton is real. He was called “a rapist,” but the boos from the crowd were not directed toward him as the video may suggest. The video was not recorded recently, either.

The footage was recorded at a Hillary Clinton campaign event in Milwaukee in October 2016, a version of which was posted by NBC News. In the recording by NBC, as is the same in the clip on X, it appears that Clinton is met with jeering from the crowd.

However, other footage shows that the boos were directed at the person who shouted. The footage also shows another protester holding a poster above the crowd, with Clinton’s face and the word “RAPE,” in the style of the Barack Obama “Hope” ad by Shepard Fairey. Both people were ejected from the venue.

According to NBC’s report on the protests, Clinton responded “You gotta feel sorry for him. They had a bad day yesterday, so they’re trying to make it up,”

“Give him a hand. When other people pour poison down your throat, don’t drink it. Give back good.”

Crucially, the impression that the crowd was booing at Clinton and that the event was held recently is incorrect.

When asked for comment on the release of the Maxwell court documents this month, Angel Urena, a spokesperson for Clinton, told Newsweek that “nothing has changed” since he released a statement about Epstein in 2019. Urena previously said Clinton knows “nothing” about the crimes Epstein pleaded guilty to in Florida or the sex trafficking crimes he was charged with in 2019.

The Ruling

Misleading Material

Misleading material.

The footage is from a Hillary Clinton campaign event held in 2016 and has nothing to do with the recent unsealing of Ghislaine Maxwell court documents.

While the former president was called “a rapist” by a member of the crowd, the boos from the audience were directed toward the protester, not Clinton.
