Fan Reactions to Harry Potter Series News Could Spell Trouble for HBO’s Reboot appeared on movieweb.com by MovieWeb.
Just because a franchise is big, it doesn’t mean that it cannot be the subject of a remake or reboot. When it comes to the Harry Potter franchise, however, there are many mixed feelings about the announcement that HBO are officially moving ahead with their new Harry Potter series, which will essentially remake the popular movie series that only came to an end a decade ago.
J.K. Rowling revealed following the publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that she would be moving away from writing novels about the boy wizard, and although she has published a series of crime novels under the name of Robert Galbraith, she has never been too far from her next Wizarding World project, which has included a stage show and the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. However, Rowling will now be acting as executive producer on the new Harry Potter series, something that has also not gone down well with everyone thanks to the ongoing debate over the author’s controversial transgender stance.
After HBO officially announced the multi-season, decade-long project to bring Harry Potter to the small screen with a mega-budget and much more storytelling time than the movies allowed, fans were quick to share their opinions online and in many cases it was not exactly positive. You can see some of the polarized opinions on the matter below.
The Harry Potter Franchise Has Expanded Far Beyond The Original Novels
Like many franchises that prove to be popular, the fact that the Harry Potter franchise was once an obscure new novel by an unknown author is now pretty much forgotten in the flurry of profit it has since generated.
While there are many fans of the novels have always made it clear that there are plenty of parts of the Harry Potter story that were missed out of the movies, the TV series is just the latest addition to the ever-growing universe of Harry Potter multi-media that has been developed over the last 25 years.
From video games, to interactive experiences, studio tours and a whole recreation of Hogwarts School, there are very few areas that the world of Harry Potter has not expanded into. It seems that there is no end in sight for the further milking of the IP. Bearing in mind that the TV show is going to reboot the entire saga, with new actors, new character designs and whole new sets that can replicate the merchandise of the movie franchise, it is not hard to see why the idea of a series was never going to be turned down once it was pitched.
The real question now is who will be starring in the new series, and that is something that will be speculated on for some time to come with early development having only started on the multi-year show. Future comparisons are always going to be made to the original Harry Potter movie cast, particularly when it comes to the likes of Alan Rickman’s Snape and Ralph Fiennes’ Voldemort, as well as Daniel Radcliffe’s titular performance as Harry Potter.
