Wake embodied true goodness; a devoted husband, father, and teammate, beloved broadcaster, and the ultimate community leader. He gave so much to the game and all of Red Sox Nation. Our deepest love and thoughts are with Stacy, Trevor, Brianna, and the Wakefield family.”
According to CNN, Wakefield played two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates before moving to the Red Sox, where he pitched for 17 years. He won 186 games and two World Series Championships before retiring in 2012. He stayed on with the team as a special assistant and broadcaster.
More From Country Living
The news was met with an outpouring of support from baseball greats like Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, and David Ortiz. Long-time Red Sox fan Kenny Chesney, who considered Wakefield a friend, shared a heartfelt post with his fans on social media.
Kenny shared two photos of himself with Wakefield at Fenway Park in Boston. He wrote, “A very tough time for Red Sox Nation and @noshoesnation. Goodbye to my friend Tim Wakefield who I shared a lot of laughs with. Tim threw batting practice to me and a few friends at @fenwaypark in 2004. He came to countless shows over the years and I’m sure gonna miss him. Rest in peace pal.”
The post was met with a flood of support from Kenny’s followers, who left messages like, “We were so lucky to have him. He was a true gentleman” and “Thank you for sharing these photos! They made my heart happy, been devastated over this ?? He was a spectacular human.”
Our condolences go out to Tim’s family, friends, and fans.
