First probable case of monkeypox found in Kalamazoo County
KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – The first probable case of the monkeypox virus was found in Kalamazoo County.
The person with the probable monkeypox is isolating and does not pose a risk to the public, the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department said in a Sept. 19 statement.
No additional cases have been identified in Kalamazoo County. There are 246 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Michigan, the statement said.
No other details about the patient will be released because of privacy, the statement said.
“At this time, the risk of contracting monkeypox remains low in Kalamazoo County,” Kalamazoo County Health Officer Jim Rutherford said in the statement. “HCS recommends, however, that Kalamazoo County Residents remain vigilant when it comes to preventing monkeypox.
“We will continue to work with all of our state and local community partners to keep residents informed of their risk, and the best methods of prevention.”
People should reach out to their doctor or the health department if they are concerned about contracting monkeypox, the release said. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle or back aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion. A rash that looks like pimples or blisters may also appear.
Most people do not need a monkeypox vaccine at this time, but the health department is vaccinating eligible people. A specific list of criteria is available on the department’s website.
