Former President Bill Clinton, Democrat leaders back Sherrod Brown at Cleveland State University rally appeared on fox8.com by Tino Bovenzi.
CLEVELAND (WJW) – The U.S. Senate race between sitting Sen. Sherrod Brown and Bernie Moreno is coming down to the wire.
The most recent Fox 8/Emerson College poll shows Moreno leading by nearly three points. Democrats made an Election Day eve effort to energize voters at Cleveland State University, bringing one of the party’s biggest voices out to lead the charge.
“He has been a great senator,” the 42nd President Bill Clinton said.
Clinton spoke for more than 20 minutes, highlighting the importance of this Senate race and also the importance of the general election. Clinton said Brown was one of his most trusted former colleagues in the Senate during his time as president.
“If you want all our kids to live and prosper, you’ve got to vote for Sherrod Brown,” Clinton said.
Many other Democrat voices also spoke in support of Brown, including State Rep. Joyce Beatty, State Sen. Nickie Antonio and more.
“I believe that he has and that he will continue to deliver for us in the city of Cleveland,” Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin said.
“Sherrod Brown has delivered to this city and cities throughout Ohio and rural areas throughout Ohio,” Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne said.
Congresswoman Shontel Brown, also up for re-election, voiced her support for “her cousin.”
“Right now, the fate of the U.S. Senate hinges on the state of Ohio,” she said.
This Senate race has quickly surpassed the $500 million mark between both campaigns, making it one of the most expensive in U.S. history.
“You see these ads on TV? They’re proven by neutral fact checkers — every single one of them to be a lie. You know that. I’ll win,” Brown said. “But when you stand up, when you stand up to billionaires, when you stand up to these interest groups, they come after you. We knew that would happen.”
Clinton urged voters to exercise their right to vote.
“One of the things I kind of respect about the hard right is they never give up,” Clinton said. “They’re just like an old flea that just keeps coming back, no matter how many times you swat it. They never give up, so you should never give up.”
Polls on Election Day open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. in Cuyahoga County. More than 62,000 people voted early in Cuyahoga County, and more than 155,000 voted by mail, according to data from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
