Gardeners ditch salt and vinegar to kill weeds after finding amazing alternative appeared on www.mirror.co.uk by The Mirror.

Using salt or vinegar as weedkiller is a distant memory, as keen gardeners discover an amazing alternative that is an incredibly easy way to get rid of weeds – and it’s pet-friendly

If you need a pet-friendly approach to killing weeds, you’re in luck as gardeners have found an effective solution – and it’s not vinegar.

Weeds can be a nuisance in any garden, but if you have pets it can be tricky to figure out the best approach to get rid of these prolifically growing plants without harming your beloved furry friends.

While you may assume that the well-known method of using salt or vinegar to rid your paving of weeds is relatively harmless, keen gardeners have warned online that you should avoid using these household items as a weed killer – as they could be toxic – and instead opt for another method, one that’s actually even easier.

A discussion took place on a UK Facebook group dedicated to gardening, where one user asked for tips on getting rid of weeds that are springing up between their paving stones, that wouldn’t be harmful to their pet cat, The Express reports.

While some users recommended the tried and tested salt or vinegar method to kill weeds, others were quick to advise that this could not only be harmful to pets but may damage the paving stones themselves or the soil surrounding the weeds.

An expert – Cass Heaphy, the Digital Director at Paving Direct – confirmed suspicions, warning: “Do not use salt to kill weeds as this can damage paving. Not only can salt damage paving, it can also harm soil health and prevent future growth if used on weeds in other areas of the garden.”

However, the green-fingered social media users were quick to provide an easy alternative to salt or vinegar that will kill weeds off quickly: boiling water.

“I prefer using boiling water. It’s much better than the white vinegar and salt method as it works instantly,” wrote one. “If you’re trying to get rid of large paving weeds it’s best to trim them down so the boiling water can reach the roots better.”

Gardener’s World also recommends using boiling water as a pet-friendly weed killer and they call this method “very easy, convenient and cheap”.

They explain that “Boiling water can kill weeds. This is a particularly useful technique on paths and paving, where you don’t have to worry about nearby plants being affected. You can also use it on a group of weeds in a border, taking care not to pour it onto nearby plants that you want to keep. Save energy by using the water that you’ve just used for boiling vegetables.”
