Gotham Knights Seemingly Releasing For PS5, Xbox Series X/S Only
A Taiwanese rating board listing suggests Gotham Knights may skip last-gen consoles and release only on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
A listing on the Taiwanese rating board seems to suggest that Gotham Knights will only launch across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms, effectively skipping last-gen hardware. Gotham Knights‘ DC FanDome 2020 world premiere trailer didn’t specify platform release plans, but most onlookers assumed it would count as a cross-gen title given the then-imminent launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Publisher WB Games has since cleared the air, though, with the game’s official website currently bearing logos for last-gen and current-gen platforms.
WB Games originally planned to launch the new title in 2021. However, developer WB Games Montréal’s need for more production time significantly delayed the long-awaited project. Its fall due date now seems set in stone to the delight of many a fan. Not since 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins has the Montréal development team helmed a AAA title, but the crew isn’t playing in Rocksteady Studios’ backyard this time around. Instead, Gotham Knights takes place in its own universe, one wholly separate from the events of the Batman: Arkham series.
A since-removed Gamerating.org listing on the Taiwanese rating board, relayed by Twisted Voxel, made mention of only the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Gotham Knights. The assumption, while tenuous, is that WB Games’ next major DC-branded title will not launch across last-gen consoles. Such a move would mean abandoning the PS4 and Xbox One iterations near the end of development, since they were previously announced and remain listed on the official Gotham Knights website.
As the ninth console generation continues on, cross-gen titles will undoubtedly become less and less common. Should the speculation prove correct, it’ll be interesting to see how WB Games goes about justifying its abandonment of last-gen in favor of a current-gen only release for the long-delayed Gotham Knights.
At the very least, the Taiwan rating board listing suggests the Bat-family-starring title remains on track for its late 2022 launch. Come October, then, fans will assume the role of several Gotham-based heroes in Batman’s absence. Notably, Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl, Nightwing, Tim Drake’s Robin, and Red Hood star in the all-new adventure, which features the secret Court of Owls society as the main antagonist. Other noteworthy Batman villains have also been confirmed to take part in the tale, including The Penguin and Mr. Freeze. What role these two, in particular, will play in the overarching narrative presently remains to be seen.
Gotham Knights is expected to hit PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on October 25.
