Health dept vigilant despite single Monkeypox case | Mangaluru News – The Times of India appeared on timesofindia.indiatimes.com by TNN.

Mangaluru: Despite having only one case of Monkeypox in the region, a 40-year-old from Karkala taluk in Udupi district who fully recovered, the health department in Dakshina Kannada remains vigilant. Besides monitoring passenger movement at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA), the department has taken precautionary steps by allocating dedicated beds at Wenlock District Hospital, although no new cases have emerged since the Dubai returnee tested positive.
Sources in the health department said that the process of discharging the patient and his wife from hospital isolation is ongoing. The patient, who showed only mild symptoms of Monkeypox, recovered fully. Since it is not a dreaded case, there is no need for apprehension, but still, the health department in Dakshina Kannada is fully prepared. Since it is a contagious disease, precaution is essential, and around 30 cases were reported across the nation, sources said.
At the MIA, a health team under the Airport Health Organisation has been monitoring regularly, sending passengers to the hospital and informing the health department. The patient, who arrived on Jan 17, reported his illness himself and was admitted to the hospital. The patient, as well as his wife, are doing well. Further, none of his contacts, including co-passengers, are in good health.
The case of Monkeypox was confirmed by the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, to the Karkala native on Jan 23. The individual, a Dubai resident, developed skin rashes and experienced a fever 48 hours prior. Following protocol, he was placed in isolation at a private medical facility, whilst his Mpox specimens were dispatched to Bangalore Medical College (BMC) before being forwarded to NIV, Pune.
