Heartening Tiger Woods News: Latest Surgery a ‘Very Positive Thing’ for the 47-Year-Old’s Speedy Return to Golf, Says Surgeon appeared on www.essentiallysports.com by EssentiallySports.
After withdrawing from the 2023 Masters, Tiger Woods recently shared another major health update with his loyal fans. The golfer took to Twitter to announce that he had undergone subtalar fusion surgery to address post-traumatic arthritis in his right leg, which was injured in a car wreck in 2021.
The 5-time Masters winner was visibly troubled during his appearance at the Augusta National earlier this month due to his injury-related challenges. As fans worry about whether Woods can bounce back, a well-known foot and ankle surgeon made a big revelation about the golfer’s surgery!

Since the tragic car accident in 2021, Tiger Woods has been a shadow of his former self. From disappointing outings to abrupt withdrawals, the 15-time major champion is yet to make a stellar comeback. His struggles have saddened many fans, who now worry if the 47-year-old will win another major.
According to Professor Nima Heidari, however, the golfer’s chances of returning to form are very probable. He expressed that Woods can watch and play the game pain-free once he has recovered. Heidari specializes in foot, ankle, and limb reconstruction and has over two decades of experience.
“The thing is one of the reasons why he’s finding it difficult to get around the golf course, to sleep, to do things because he’s got pain in his foot,” he revealed in an interview with Golf Monthly. Heidari believes that the alleviation of pain can only mean “good things for his play.”
“I think actually it’s a very positive thing because he’s really recovered from the original injury, ” said Heidari. “There’s two things about him which are incredible. One of them is him. And there’s no substitute for his hunger and his desire to be the best and to continue to be the best and to win.”
Professor Heidari sheds light on Woods’ subtalar fusion surgery
A well-known consultant, Heidari has experience dealing with the kind of injuries and surgeries the golfing legend has been through. He also shed light on Woods’ latest surgery, saying, “If you have arthritis in your subtalar joint, you have difficulty in traversing on uneven ground and you have pain as a result of it.” The surgeon is unsure whether the golfer will walk with a limp now. However, it is possible for the golfer to develop ankle joint-related troubles, but it is not an “immediate effect.”
Will Tiger Woods’ swing suffer as a result of the surgery? Heidari does not think so, pointing towards Woods’ form straight out of the injury. He also said that the 47-year-old has been treated by “a very, very skillful surgeon.”

Given the lengthy recovery process and rehabilitation time, it is unlikely for Woods to play in next month’s PGA Championship. He will also likely miss June’s U.S. Open and July’s Open Championship. Professor Heidari further stressed the significance of rehabilitation. “He’s going to need a period of rehabilitation. But I mean, to be honest with you, if anyone is going to make a comeback it’s going to be Tiger Woods. This man is incredible.”
