Independent John Moran leading Limerick Mayoral Election appeared on www.rte.ie by Cathy Halloran.

Independent John Moran remains the leader in the race to be the first directly elected Mayor of Limerick.

Following the eighth count, which was to the distribute Labour candidate Conor Sheehan’s 3,047 votes, Mr Moran is on 19,719 votes.

Helen O’Donnell, also an independent, is on 14,288 while Dee Ryan of Fianna Fáil has 12,937 votes.

Daniel Butler of Fine Gael now has 11,337 votes, followed by Sinn Féin’s Maurice Quinlivan on 9,528.

The quota has been set at 39,873, meaning there is still a lot of counting to be done before a winner can be announced.

The ninth count will distribute the votes of the next two lowest candidates Elisa O’Donovan of the Social Democrats, who is on 3,799, and independent Frankie Daly who received 5,684 votes.

The count has been adjourned by Returning Officer Caroline Curley until tomorrow morning when Count 9 will get under way.

Two candidates were excluded after the fourth count; Laura Keyes, Rabharta, and Caitríona Ní Chatháin of the Socialist Party, while Green Party TD Brian Leddin was excluded on count five.

Aontú’s Sarah Beasley was eliminated after the sixth count.

Labour’s Conor Sheehan is the youngest candidate in the election and was excluded on Count 7

Independent Colm Ó Móráin was the first candidate to be excluded. People Before Profit-Solidarity’s Ruairí Fahy was excluded following the second count and Gerben Uunk of the Party for Animal Welfare was eliminated after the third count.

Before the first count was announced, Mr Moran told RTÉ News that he was happy with the distribution of votes that he has seen, with support coming from all corners of the city and county.

Minister for State Martin Heydon said the race to become Mayor of Limerick “is probably [John Moran’s] to lose at this point”.

The Fine Gael TD also said the party’s candidate, Daniel Butler, received a “very credible first preference” but transfers will play a big role in the outcome of the election.

“Obviously Helen O’Donnell (independent) has strong Fine Gael connections and whichever of herself or Daniel were to go out first, you would expect it could be quite an inter transfer there,” Mr Heydon added.

On 7 June, citizens of Limerick were given three ballot papers on which to cast their votes.

One for the local elections, one for the European elections for the Ireland South constituency and one to directly elect their own mayor of Limerick city and county.

The mayor will propose the annual budget, propose and implement the development plan for the city and county, develop a housing plan and ensure its delivery and be responsible for road transport among other matters.

The mayor will also meet directly with Government at least four times a year to provide updates on the progress of the office and its work.
