Indie Horror Game ‘The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow’ Out On PC

It’s no secret that Monkey Island has made a comeback. Return to Monkey Island launched earlier this month, marking the return of wacky hero Guybrush Threepwood’s point-and-click adventures. But perhaps the goofy, light-hearted nature of the Monkey Island series isn’t your thing. If you’ve been longing for a point-and-click game with a darker tone, then we might have some good news for you. A new indie horror game called The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow debuted on PC today.

The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow is an indie “folk horror” game

Developed by Cloak & Dagger Games and published by Wadjet Eye Games, The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow tells the story of Thomasina Bateman. The game takes place in England, where Thomasina is writing a book about the country’s barrows. Unfortunately for her, according to today’s press release, things soon take a turn for the bizarre.

“When an intriguing letter summons her to the small village of Bewlay, tucked away in the remote countryside, she sets off by train with her assistant a day behind. Upon her arrival, however, the mysterious man who summoned her is nowhere to be found. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses access to the barrow, and the locals are wary of this woman who is traveling alone and (gasp!) wears trousers. The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow is off to a rocky start. And then Thomasina starts having strange dreams…”

The press release calls The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow a “folk horror adventure.” According to the game’s Steam store page, the player will guide Thomasina around the world, solving puzzles and interacting with characters to solve the mystery. The whole thing is presented in pixel art style, to which the genre is no stranger. It will be interesting to see how this indie horror game stacks up in comparison to more established point-and-click PC games series.

The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow is out now on Steam and GOG.
