Jelly Roll’s New Single Pushes Eminem Out Of The No. 1 Spot appeared on www.forbes.com by Hugh McIntyre.
Jelly Roll has been racking up hit after hit for a few years now. The rapper-turned-country musician’s latest chapter or two of his career have helped him become a household name, and now he’s looking to keep the wins coming with his new single.
On Wednesday (June 12), Roll released his new song “I Am Not Okay,” and fans reacted quickly. The tune shot right to No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes chart shortly after it dropped. The speed at which the track soared to the summit shows that his following in America was not only aware that the cut was coming, but that there’s an intense interest in new music from the superstar.
Roll easily bests Eminem atop the iTunes chart, with his latest single replacing the rapper at No. 1. As “I Am Not Okay” bolted to the top spot, it pushed Eminem’s “Houdini” off of the throne.
“Houdini” has largely been running the show on iTunes in America ever since it was released over a week ago. The tune sold incredibly well in its first tracking frame, and now it appears on a number of Billboard charts thanks to its impressive opening sales sum. While Eminem’s latest was still dominating the platform earlier today, it couldn’t compete with “I Am Not Okay,” at least not on that song’s first day of availability.
“I Am Not Okay” is selling very well, but it may face an uphill battle when it comes to earning a lofty debut on the Billboard charts. The single was released mid-tracking week, which will handicap its performance on the rankings next frame.
Roll’s latest offering only has about two days in which to rack up streams and sales that will impact its debut on a number of tallies. The track does appear to have some power behind it, but its shortened opening frame may cause it to launch lower than it would have if it dropped on a Friday, as most new releases do.
If “I Am Not Okay” continues to sell well, and if fans also listen to it on streaming sites and radio stations play it, Roll might have another proper hit on his hands…though he may need to wait a little bit to see it rise the charts in a noticeable way. The tune will likely debut on several rankings in a few days, but the following week, it will hopefully bolt up those lists and many more, once its first complete seven-day tracking frame has eclipsed.
“I Am Not Okay” appears to be the first taste of a new album from Roll. He last dropped a collection a year ago, when he shared Whitsitt Chapel. That set marked his first complete full-length in the country space, and it proved to be a sizable commercial success.
