Joe and Anthony Russo Set up Civil War for Just One Robert Downey Jr Scene That Wasn't Even That Impactful appeared on fandomwire.com by FandomWire.
The MCU has often been criticized for its contemptuous nature when it comes to holding its heroes responsible for their actions. But Captain America: Civil War proved to be an exception, at least during its beginning, which saw the Avengers being called out over the destruction of Sokovia.
However, this aspect is shorty put to the corner in favor of setting up a conflict between Steve and Tony, which contributes to the events of Infinity War. While the movie is by no means bad, arguably one of the best Pre-Infinity War flicks the MCU had to offer, there was also a colossal waste of potential.
Joe and Anthony Russo Didn’t Do Enough With Civil War
Despite having some interesting ideas underneath, especially the whole ordeal with the Sokovia accords, which heavily leans into Tony’s guilt over the events of Age of Ultron, these aren’t explored enough. The film eventually becomes a goose chase between Black Panther, Captain America, and Iron Man, which leads to Tony finding out about Bucky being his parents’ killer.
It appears, from the get-go, Joe and Anthony Russo had no intention of making this a commentary on the Avengers’ reckless actions, which the film initially let us believe. The director duo clarified that their main goal was “How do we put them on opposite sides”, and everything else in the flick was driving towards the end fight between Steve and Tony.
That was really the essential idea, that everything in the movie was driving towards, is, ‘How do we put them on opposite sides, and then how do we create a crisis moment for the two of them, around this very personal revelation?’
Although things worked out greatly for the Russo brothers and the film, it’s safe to say the film had room to tell a more intimate story and touch more nuanced themes.
The Top Brass at Marvel Weren’t Initially Thrilled by Civil War‘s End Fight
When the Russo brothers initially pitched their idea of Civil War, the top brass at Marvel were less than thrilled. originally, the committee wanted to take the standard CBM route and pit the heroes against nameless unfrozen super soldiers, but fortunately, Kevin Feige backed the directing duo. Per MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,
The Committee proposed a different version in which the heroes team up to fight a bunch of unfrozen Super Soldiers. As Kyle remembered it, ‘We were discussing Civil War and the question posed to us is, ‘Who wants to watch a movie with heroes fighting heroes?’
Despite tiptoeing over some interesting ideas in Civil War, the latter releases never delved into Tony’s emotional turmoil after its events, which could’ve brought another dimension to his character.
Captain America: Civil War is available to stream on Disney Plus.
