John Mayer Volunteers As Opening Act For Ed Sheeran Between Dead & Company Shows [Videos] appeared on liveforlivemusic.com by L4LM.
After injuries from a car accident left his support act unable to perform, Ed Sheeran tapped none other than John Mayer to open his show at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA on Friday.
Mayer, who Sheeran has cited as one of his musical heroes, warmed up the crowd with a captivating solo acoustic set—a skill he honed during his last solo tour. He sported a custom-printed t-shirt that read “John Mayer opened for Ed Sheeran,” with Ed’s name in big orange and purple letters to mimic the FedEx logo.

After Mayer’s solo set, Sheeran took the stage with a full live band and played a show complete with flashy production elements like a rotating stage and pyrotechnics—ironic considering it is Sheeran who built his career on solo acoustic performances, not Mayer. The British pop star did play a set of tunes sans band in the middle of the show, and shortly after the other musicians returned, Mayer joined in for a guitar-heavy take on Sheeran’s hit song “Thinking Out Loud”. The two previously performed the song together at the Grammys and at Mayer’s shows, but it was the first time they played it at one of Ed’s.

Sheeran told fans on Friday that Gillette Stadium was his favorite place to play in the U.S. in addition to being the first football stadium he ever played solo. He returns to the venue tonight, Saturday, July 1st with support from singer-songwriter Rosa Linn, who also opened for Sheeran on Thursday at Boston’s Wang Theatre. Mayer meanwhile heads to Boulder, CO to rejoin Dead & Company for the first of two shows at Folsom Field.
