Kenny Chesney at Houston Rodeo: A superstar returns after 7 years appeared on www.houstonchronicle.com by Joey Guerra.

That was the case Wednesday night at RodeoHouston, where Kenny Chesney returned for the first time in seven years. He’s one of country music’s biggest stars with a career spanning three decades.

YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED: Which Houston Rodeo act has drawn the biggest crowd this year?

It’s why it’s taken him so long to return to the rotating stage. Chesney is one of the few country acts who can command stadium-size audiences outside of RodeoHouston. He was scheduled to play Minute Maid Park in 2020 until COVID-19 took everyone off the road.

Wednesday’s show drew 72,078 paid attendance, and every one of them seemed to be at the carnival earlier in the day. Spring Break at Rodeo is no joke, y’all.

Many of Chesney’s songs — “Beer in Mexico,” “Reality,” “Summertime” — take on an ‘80s arena rock vibe in a live setting. He’s an effusive but workmanlike performer, and it’s a balance that serves him well. He repeatedly thanked the crowd for welcoming him back.

Beach vibes, of course, abounded during “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven” and “When the Sun Goes Down.” But Chesney pushes himself in other directions, too. “Somewhere with You” takes an interesting, musically darker turn. “Get Along” espoused an up-with-people theme. “American Kids” mined a rootsy vibe.

“Setting the World on Fire” was Chesney’s moment of pop grandness. The original version features singer Pink.

“We hope to make it (show) No. 10 sometime soon,” Chesney told the crowd.

Judging by the response and the numbers, that could be next year. If he’s not already playing another huge stadium.
