Killzone VR and Modern Warfare 2 VR Leaked Ahead of State of Play

There’s an all-new State of Play stream happening on Thursday, June 2, and fans are eager to see what Sony has up its sleeve for the big summer PlayStation presentation. While E3 isn’t happening this year, it’s still the season for big game reveals, and this lengthy State of Play will likely feature a wide range of exciting announcements. Leaks are commonplace with these types of presentations, and VR versions of Killzone and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have already been teased by insiders ahead of the June State of Play.

According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, this presentation will run for roughly 30 minutes and feature “exciting reveals from our third-party partners, plus a sneak peek at several games in development for PlayStation VR2.” PSVR2 has been officially revealed but it doesn’t have a release date yet, so this State of Play could showcase the launch lineup for the device and reveal its official release date.

Modern Warfare 2 VR Could Be Revealed During State of Play

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was officially unveiled to the world just last week with a release date of October 28, but Infinity Ward may have more up its sleeve if two insiders are to be believed. According to leakers RalphsValve and AccNGT, Modern Warfare 2 will have VR integration exclusively available on PlayStation VR2. It’s unclear how extensive the VR integration will be, but don’t expect anything major.

This wouldn’t be the first time that an Infinity Ward-led Call of Duty title had VR support on PlayStation. 2016’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare came with a free VR experience to celebrate the launch of the original PSVR headset. That VR add-on, titled the Jackal Assault VR Experience, only lasted a few minutes and wasn’t much of a game at all. That’s the type of VR integration that you should expect from Modern Warfare 2 if this leak is to be believed.

Some fans are hopeful that the VR mode for Modern Warfare 2 will be similar to the Clean House mission from the previous Modern Warfare campaign. This level saw a team of operatives slowly clear an apartment building full of terrorists, and its methodical pacing would be perfect for a VR experience. It won’t be long before we get an official look at this VR mode, as the State of Play presentation is slated for June 2.

Killzone VR May Be in Development

That’s not the only major PSVR2 project that may be coming, however. A report from PSVR Without Parole, a YouTube channel that has correctly leaked certain PSVR details in the past, a Killzone VR game could be on the way for PSVR2.

The report states that Killzone VR was initially in development for the first PlayStation VR and led by Supermassive Games, the developer of Until Dawn. Sony wasn’t happy with the progress that Supermassive had made on the title however and moved the project back to an internal studio.

Supermassive released a handful of games for PSVR, ranging from the mediocre Until Dawn: Rush of Blood to the outright bad Bravo Team, so it’s not entirely unbelievable that they’d be the choice for a potential Killzone VR game since Guerilla was busy with Horizon. Given the studio’s PSVR history as well, it makes sense that Sony may not have been pleased with the state of Supermassive’s Killzone VR development.

Still, both of these leaks have yet to be confirmed, so don’t be disappointed if Killzone and Modern Warfare 2 don’t make an appearance in the upcoming State of Play. If anything, Modern Warfare 2 is the likeliest to appear since Killzone VR is still likely still a ways off. The June 2 State of Play will have a large focus on PSVR2 titles regardless though, so VR fans still have plenty of things to look forward to.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
