Lampinen: Did column present a fair characterization or slander? appeared on www.manisteenews.com by manisteenews.com.

In a column published Aug. 12 in the News Advocate, Jeff Lawrence accused another opinion writer of slander saying, “He chose to use the Democrat’s July opinion space to slander Republicans, labeling us as people who speak a ‘message of chaos and fear.’”

This is a serious allegation. The validity of Mr. Lawrence’s accusation and the values that his party espouses, might be examined using a litmus test applied to his statement.

Let’s ask: Which political party immediately comes to mind when we reference the following events and phrases that have occurred over the past two presidential cycles?

A statement describing asylum seekers spoken at a June 2015 campaign kickoff event: “They’re bringing drugs, They’re bringing crime, They’re rapists.”

The Jan. 6 insurrectionists beating Capitol police with American flags, (calling themselves patriots) and shouting on video during that event, “Hang Mike Pence” and “Kill Nancy Pelosi.”

The Michigan Capitol being invaded by armed militia while displaying Nazi and confederate flags in April 2020.

Attempting the kidnapping and murder of Michigan’s Gov. Whitmer.

The fake electors from seven states whose sole mission was to overturn a legitimate election and keep their candidate in power.

Political flags and bumper stickers employing expletives and reading “expletive Joe Biden” and “Trump 2024, expletive your feelings.”

The banning of books and outlawing of historical fact being taught in schools.

The activity of groups including the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, the Boogaloo movement, Three Percenters and Michigan Militia.

The 91 felonies charging a presidential candidate and party leader this year alone.

Phrases including:

The election was stolen.

Illegal immigrants are stealing your jobs.

Dead people are voting.

Drag queens are sexualizing our children.

I could continue but you can judge. Were Republicans slandered or were they accurately characterized as bearers of a message of chaos and fear?

Mr. Lawrence ends his column with “you are welcomed to join the civilized forum of a GOP gathering.” I ask Mr. Lawrence, judging from the examples above, does such a gathering exist?
