Langya memes take over Twitter as new virus is discovered in China

Fear is flooding social media as China has detected a new virus called Langya.

Langya henipavirus (LayV) has been found in 35 patients across Eastern China and is thought to be spread through rodents, particularly shrews.

The virus was discovered earlier this month and patients have flu-like symptoms including fever, fatigue and a cough.

The situation is sounding all too familiar as Covid-19 started in the Chinese city of Wuhan in the Hubei Province and quickly spread around the world.

Now, people are fearing that this could be the start of another global pandemic and Langya memes are flooding Twitter.

‘No need to panic’

Langya was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine on August 2nd and researcher Wang Linfa told the Global Times that there is “no need to panic”.

However, we should be “alert” as whilst only 35 cases have been detected, the LayV virus can easily jump from animals to humans.

The scientists found Langya in 27% of shrews tested, 5% of dogs and 2% of goats, meaning the henipavirus is already spreading amongst animals.

As reported by Bloomberg, most of the patients are farmers who are experiencing fatigue, cough, loss of appetite and aches.

However, there is no evidence that it can be spread from human to human right now and more investigation is needed.

Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control said it is “paying attention” to the medical report and plans to start screening for the virus.
