Larian considered releasing Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS4 and Xbox One, what about the Xbox Series S? appeared on en.as.com by Meristation.

Larian Studios studied the possibility of adapting Baldur’s Gate 3 to PS4 and Xbox One, but the studio came to the conclusion that it would be a very difficult task, not in terms of single-player, but in terms of multiplayer. The fact that they also had a rocky road with the Xbox Series S shows that the process is complex. In an interview with MeriStation, Swen Vincke, the game’s director, answered the question about previous generation consoles while explaining what happened with the version for Microsoft consoles.

“We did (look at the PS4 and Xbox One versions). The reason we decided not to do it was the city, it was too much. It would have worked in single player, but in multiplayer, with split screen, it would have been problematic. The ability to play with a friend is important to us, it’s an integral part of the gameplay experience, so we didn’t want to compromise on that”. He adds, “It’s such a big game that you’re going to be playing for a long time, so if you want to enjoy it with a friend as a companion,” you should be able to.

What about the Xbox Series S version?

As for the Xbox Series S version, which has also caused problems, Vincke responds as follows: “If you have only one player, there is a certain area with active NPCs and the rest of the world is not active. If you have four players, there are four zones with active, uncontrollable characters. In a place where you can blow everything up, things start to get complicated.”

According to the developer, when the console runs low on memory, complications arise. “We can optimize, we managed to get Divinity Original Sin 2 on the Switch (including the multiplayer), which was not an easy thing to do. It’s not impossible, it just takes time. It’s annoying and frustrating, but we have to follow this process.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 will leave Early Access on PC on August 3. PS5 players will have to wait a little longer, until September 6th.
