A newly-released clip from Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated Western crime drama, Killers of the Flower Moon, features a gripping and tense sequence involving Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro as they reunite on-screen.
Released by Paramount Pictures on Oct. 5, the clip sees DiCaprio’s war hero character, Ernest Burkhart, and De Niro’s chief antagonist, William Hale, hash out a contract killing gone wrong. Hale lashes out at Burkhart, telling him, “It’s supposed to be a suicide, you dumbbell! You didn’t tell him to leave the gun?” before an upset Burkhart responds, “I don’t know why! I told him to leave the gun, just like you told me. I don’t know why he didn’t!” The two then argue about how the killing should have been executed, with Burkhart claiming he told the victim to shoot himself in front of the head as Hale told him to so that it didn’t look like a murder. Finally, the pair drives off into the dark streets while continuing their argument.
Killers of the Flower Moon explores the real-life Osage murders that took place throughout Oklahoma in the 1920s, with the Osage Nation targeted for their oil and overall wealth. Adapting David Grann’s hit novel of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon sees Burkhart marry into the Osage tribe after meeting Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone) and later marrying her after being convinced by Hale to go through with the relationship. From there, Burkhart becomes increasingly conflicted as Hale, his uncle, leads a shooting spree that has the Osage community under siege and Mollie wondering if Burkhart’s intentions are genuine.
Though DiCaprio and De Niro are longtime collaborators with Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon marks the first time the two work together on a Scorsese film. The upcoming flick is the first time DiCaprio and De Niro will appear on-screen together since 1993’s This Boy’s Life. Though they haven’t worked together in three decades, they’ve long been complimentary of each other, with Scorsese recently revealing how De Niro convinced him to cast DiCaprio in 2002’s Gangs of New York.
Scorsese made adjustments to the Killers of the Flower Moon story before its release, opting to focus more on the love story between Ernest and Mollie rather than the rise of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which grew in stature thanks to the Osage case. The film also stars Jesse Plemons as lawman Tom White and Brendan Fraser as Hale’s corrupt attorney W.S. Hamilton.
Killers of the Flower Moon has been projected for a $20+ million opening weekend upon its debut. The movie was initially supposed to be an Apple TV+ exclusive before a theatrical release was eventually greenlit.
Killers of the Flower Moon premieres in theaters worldwide on Oct. 20 and will be available for streaming via Apple TV+ at a later date.
