The Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center is presenting the Lew Del Gatto Quartet featuring trumpeter Leroy Jones, from New Orleans, Louisiana, on Friday, Feb. 10, as the first concert of the Jazzy Nights Concert Series. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 in advance, Table of 4, $225, and Table of 8, $450, Jazzy nights series tickets are also available. General admission student price with student ID is $10. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District.
The evening features New Orleans great Leroy Jones with a tremendous group of musicians for an night of hard-swinging acoustic jazz music including legendary tenor saxophonist Lew Del Gatto, the spectacular New York City pianist Roy Gerson, popular local bassist Don Mopsick and drummer Tony Vigilante.
Lew Del Gatto has been a dynamic figure in the New York music scene for over 30 years. His versatility and knowledgeable comprehension of musical art-form was the basis for a stellar career. He has been involved with jingles, films, Broadway, television, and jazz. Lew has also been busy in the film industry and is on numerous recordings for such artists as Harry Connick, Jr, Paul Simon, and Billy Joel. Lew’s live appearances are impressive. He has appeared with many giants in the music world including Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and Liza Minelli. All of Lew’s musical roads have paved the way for what is yet to come — his total devotion to jazz. Lew has always been intricately entwined in the music world in various mediums, but his first love is jazz… that is what he plays at every possible moment and where his best instrumental voice can be heard.
Leroy Jones has established himself as one of New Orleans most sought-after trumpeters, blowing through 6-hour gigs on Bourbon Street. He founded the legendary Fairview Baptist Brass Band and Hurricane Brass Band, which helped spearhead the revival of the brass band scene in New Orleans. As Jones played in and around New Orleans, he caught the ear of fellow New Orleans musician Harry Connick Jr. Jones was invited by Harry Connick Jr. to join his orchestra. Jones went on to tour with Connick for more than 17 years. Over this span, Jones recorded over 20 albums with Harry Connick Jr’s band. The musical partnership also led to Leroy recording two of his own studio albums, starting his own quintet, and eventually becoming the opening band for Harry Connick Jr. ‘s big band.
The SBDAC’s Jazzy Nights Series was underwritten by Alexandra Bremner in memory of Eunice Bremner. SBDAC’s 22- 23 season Jazzy Nights Series also features upcoming concerts with Gunhild Carling Feb. 24, and the Adrian Cunningham Quartet on March 11.
Additionally, Friday night at Sidney’s Rooftop, Havy Rodriguez will be performing live on Feb. 10, from 8 – 11 p.m. Donations encouraged. Sidney’s Rooftop Sculpture Garden is open select Fridays 6 p.m.- midnight. Due to Hurricane Ian, the elevator is currently under repair, making it necessary that all visitors are able to access the rooftop for entry by the 3-flight staircase.
