Liverpool scraped through to the last 16 of the Carabao Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory over League One outfit Derby County on Wednesday as the Reds lacked a clinical finisher on the night.
However, plans may already be in advance to snap up one of European football’s brightest prospects next year, although Liverpool will now face competition from north-west rivals Manchester United. Elsewhere, the Reds got their first full glimpse of the ‘next Frank Lampard’ among their ranks during their 0-0 draw with the Rams in midweek.
Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Anfield.
Reds rivalled for “world’s biggest talent”
Liverpool will now face competition from Man United for Borussia Dortmund’s 17-year-old striker Youssoufa Moukoko.
The Reds have been linked with signing the youngster when his current deal in Germany runs out next summer, with the player having been previously dubbed “the biggest talent in the world” by none other than Manchester City forward Erling Haaland.
Haaland was teammates with Moukoko during their time together at Dortmund and now SportBILD is reporting that United ‘have their sights set’ on signing the highly-rated striker after his father supposedly fell out with his agent over recent negotiations to extend his deal at Dortmund.

Liverpool get glimpse of ‘next Frank Lampard’
Liverpool were able to grab a full glimpse of the ‘next Frank Lampard’ amongst their ranks following their Carabao Cup clash with Derby on Wednesday.
Jurgen Klopp made 11 changes for the 0-0 draw with the Rams, which ended in a 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory, and handed starts to four academy graduates. But it was 18-year-old Melkamu Frauendorf who stood out in particular, despite the natural central midfielder being deployed on the right wing.
After watching a Liverpool Under-18 fixture in early 2021, a scout for a rival Premier League club told the Liverpool Echo that Frauendorf reminded him of Lampard. Following his full debut for the club, some light was shed on why he has been tipped for a very bright future at Anfield.

The German made 11 changes for the tie and handed starts to the likes of Calvin Ramsay, Stefan Bajcetic, Bobby Clark, Frauendorf, Layton Rhys Stewart. 17-year-old Ben Doak was also introduced in the second half and his performance left Klopp singing his praises after the game.
He said: “That’s Ben. His instructions were easy: do what you do all the time. He is really a lively boy, a smart player, good dribbler, fast, can use both legs. He’s good. It was nice to watch, really nice to watch – him coming in and immediately a lot of things are obviously natural to him, which is really helpful.”
