Luke Combs Breaks Records, Shares Story Behind “5 Leaf Clover” appeared on www.cmt.com by CMT.
Luke Combs is making wishes and breaking records.
Combs’ “Going, Going, Gone” just became his 15th No. 1 hit on country radio, and he’s about to release fan favorite “Five Leaf Clover” on Friday ahead of his new album, “Gettin’ Old,” that will be out on March 24. Combs is the first person to accumulate 15 consecutive No. 1 singles upon their debut and one of the fastest to hit the milestone. Other artists with 15 No. 1 songs include Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Alabama.
“Going, Going, Gone” is the final song from Combs’ 2022 release “Growin’ Up.” He said he intended the track to hint at things to come.
“The point of that was to go, ‘OK, well, this is where we’re going,” Combs said. “Like, I didn’t announce when ‘Growin’ Up’ came out that there was gonna be a second part to this thing.”
He wanted fans to recognize the song had a new sound and want more of it.
“I wanted people to go … it’s different, it’s something else, but I still love it, and I still can relate to it,'” he said. “And I wanted to let people know that that’s kind of where this was going, right, like leading into this next album.”
When Combs started discussing which songs would be included on “Gettin’ Old,” “5 Leaf Clover” was among the most requested. And the North Carolina native took note. The song is on the new album, and Combs recently posted the story behind the fan-favorite track.
Combs said he and one of his friends were looking for four-leaf clovers in a clover plot at his house. The singer found a four-leaf clover and then, a short while later, found a five-leaf clover.
“I thought to myself, ‘Man, how lucky do you have to be to find a 5 Leaf Clover?'” Combs wrote on Instagram.
He didn’t think too much of it but wrote five-leaf clover down as a possible song title in his phone. The singer remembered the scenario a few weeks later while writing songs with Jessi Alexander and Chase McGill. He still wasn’t in love with the idea but shared the concept with them, along with a guitar melody he was working on. They loved it.
“I eventually started playing it at shows and posted a video of the song, and y’all quickly let me know it was one I had to record,” he said. “That’s why I’m super pumped for you all to hear it THIS Friday.”
Produced by Combs, Chip Matthews and Jonathan Singleton, “Gettin’ Old” is Combs’ fourth full-length album. His other collections include “Growin’ Up,” 2019’s “What You See is What You Get” and his debut, “This One’s For You.”
“Gettin’ Old” is 18 songs deep and also includes a version of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” as well as another fan-favorite “Tattoo On a Sunburn.”
