Mare is a game with a beautiful art style and can be played using only your eyes thanks to Playstation VR 2’s eye tracking.
FACTS
Mare is a VR game that combines a mystical story, exploration, and puzzles with an art style reminiscent of Fumito Ueda’s games such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.
You take on the role of a mechanical bird and must guide a little girl safely past obstacles and dangers through surreal landscapes and ancient, dilapidated cities. The story unfolds over eight chapters. Throughout the game, you will find hidden artifacts that reveal secrets about this strange world.
Mare will be released for Playstation VR 2 in fall 2024, and you can already add it to your wishlist on the Playstation Store.
CONTEXT
A forgotten VR gem is coming to Playstation VR 2
Mare is already available on the Quest Store (2021) and on Steam (2022).
I reviewed Mare at launch with a Quest 2 and praised the art style and atmosphere, while finding the puzzles and pathfinding frustrating at times. Here’s an excerpt from the review:
“With its desolate landscapes, atmospheric lighting, and minimal story, Mare is reminiscent of Fumito Ueda’s games and the wonderful Paper Beast. Like the latter, Mare thrives on its mysterious and beautifully designed game world, which never explains itself and whose story and characters remain blurred like the fragments of a dream. In a positive sense, Mare felt more like an experience than a game to me.
If you can overlook the few flaws in the game design and are looking for an experience that will make you sink into your chair and relax, you will be happy with Mare.
The game is especially recommended for those who are new to virtual reality or video games and feel overwhelmed by even a gamepad. A VR game couldn’t be easier than Mare: All you have to do is look around and press a button to interact with objects.”
