Following the release of this year’s Killers of the Flower Moon, seminal director Martin Scorsese will once again unite with Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wager, author David Grann has confirmed. Grann, who is the writer behind the nonfiction book on which the movie will be based, The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder, has revealed that The Wager will in fact be Scorsese and DiCaprio’s next project. Which is surely reason for cinema lovers to celebrate.
News of The Wager first emerged last year, but Grann has now confirmed while speaking with the French outlet Télérama that Scorsese and DiCaprio will reunite on the project, and that the pair will begin work on this shipwreck tale after Killers of the Flower Moon, marking their seventh feature film collaboration.
“Set in the 1740s, Wager’s story is set in motion when a patched-together boat with 30 emaciated men landed on the coast of Brazil,” the official synopsis for David Grann’s book The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder reads. “The men were the surviving crew of British ship that was chasing a Spanish vessel and had crashed onto an island in South America’s Patagonia region. Their tales of surviving the seas and elements made them heroes. However, six months later another vessel, even more beat up than the first one, ended up on the coat of Chile, this one with three men. These new sailors charged that the other men were actually mutineers.”
Grann is also the author behind the book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, on which the upcoming movie is based. His latest, The Wager, has already been a bestseller for several weeks.
While further details regarding The Wager remain unknown at present, it is possible that, with the plot involving a large group of characters, we could see a stellar supporting cast assembled alongside DiCaprio.
Killers of the Flower Moon Is Due to Be Released in October
While we await Scorsese and DiCaprio’s shipwreck tale, the pair will next astound audiences with the epic Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon.
“At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight,” reads the official synopsis. “The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder. Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal.”
Directed by Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Scorsese and Eric Roth, Breaking Bad star and Academy Award nominee Jesse Plemons will lead Killers of the Flower Moon as old-style lawman Tom White, with Leonardo DiCaprio set to play a man named Ernest Burkhart. Hollywood icon Robert De Niro meanwhile will portray Burkhart’s uncle, the American cattleman and convicted murderer William Hale. The rest of the hugely impressive cast includes recent Oscar winner Brendan Fraser, Lily Gladstone, Tantoo Cardinal, Jack White, and John Lithgow.
Killers of the Flower Moon is scheduled to be released in select theaters on October 6, before a wider release on October 20, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. The thriller when then land on Apple TV+ at a later date.
