A solution for the child care crisis and a sweeping crime-fighting bill were the topics for Congressman Morgan McGarvey and Sen. Rand Paul.U.S. Rep. McGarvey met with child care advocates, who say the industry is facing a cliff when pandemic-era federal subsidies expire in March.”You think about any small business. You’ve got three months left to figure something out. And then you’re raising prices for parents. You’re dropping your pay for your workforce. And you’ve got to make those plans now,” said Brigitte Bloom, the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence.To help, McGarvey is co-sponsoring the Stabilize Child Care Act, which will provide $16 billion per year in subsidies for the next five years.”It’s a cruel thing that parents have to face. When you’re of a certain age, you’re trying to get your career started and then also you’ve got to make sure your children are taken care of,” McGarvey.Just after McGarvey’s roundtable, Sen. Paul met with state lawmakers from the Louisville area to discuss a variety of topics, including public safety.The GOP state lawmakers told Paul about the Safer Kentucky Act, legislation to stiffen penalties on violent crime and help keep people from reoffending.”After the hearing last week, as you might imagine, a number of people have reached out, a number of my Democratic colleagues in the House, and so we’re taking those meetings and we’re going to continue to adapt and adjust the policy,” said Rep. Jared Bauman.Paul says he understands people might be wary.”They don’t want their kids going to jail for marijuana or drug possession, so they have a mixed view on what we should do on crime. But I think as long as it’s separated out and you’re trying to say, ‘No, we want that bad kid that’s trying to shoot into houses and is going to shoot your kid at the bus stop, that’s who we want out of your neighborhood,” Paul said.Paul told the group he supports the bill.State lawmakers return to Frankfort on Jan. 2.
