Meet the 100-year-old who still cooks herself a bacon sandwich every morning appeared on www.chroniclelive.co.uk by ChronicleLive.
A North Tyneside woman was very excited to celebrate her landmark 100th birthday on Friday 3rd of February.
Mary Gillon, who goes by Molly, marked the occasion with her loved ones at her care home Bewicke Lodge in Howdon. Molly’s niece Elaine Burdis has spoken about her experience of her auntie growing up and how she coped during the pandemic.
“I used to love visiting her when I was young. Her husband was a miner so they lived in a fabulous community alongside his colleagues in the drift”, Elaine said. “She played her part during the war, and I’ve always admired her for what she did to help keep the country going.

“Her parents had 14 children and she was in the middle of them. She means everything to me and it is amazing that she gets to experience such an amazing milestone in her life. The best part is that she will be able to see her friends in the home in a way that she couldn’t during the pandemic.”
The days of Coronavirus were such a difficult time for Molly, as she was unable to see her friends and family, both at the care home and elsewhere. Elaine has told of her aunt’s delight at now being able to socialise in the way she used to love before the Covid-19 pandemic.
She added: “Molly is very independent, she still cooks herself a bacon sandwich in the morning but she is equally as sociable, joining in with the residents at the activities put on by the staff at the home. During the pandemic she was confined to her own room which she found very hard but she understood what was at stake.
“Covid affected everyone in so many different ways, but it affected older people so much more. They lost people close to them and were also isolated from their families. Care home staff worked so hard during the pandemic to keep Molly safe.
“Molly always says ‘what have we got to lose’, and she would sometimes sneak around the care home to drop in and see her friends, which I’m told was the best part of their days. She’s still got the best sense of humour and is a bit cheeky which is brilliant to see.
“She had an amazing birthday and loved celebrating with her friends and family. She was visited by members of the RAF and she was also so excited to receive her 100th birthday card from King Charles.”
