If Meghan Markle harbours any ambitions to become the Queen of England, she’s going about it quite a strange way.

When she got engaged to Prince Harry in 2017, he was only fifth in line to the British throne. And then, of course, the couple decided to step back as working members of the Royal Family at the start of 2020.

But on the off chance there’s a part of her that secretly yearns for that title, there might just be a way for her to claim it – as long as she doesn’t mind an asterisk the size of Buckingham Palace.

First things first: there’s a Korean-American tech multimillionaire and occasional hip-hop artist named Andrew Lee who is the self-declared king of a cyberstate named Joseon.

Trust us, we’ll get back to the Meghan stuff in a second.

Joseon, which sees itself as the digital successor to the kingdom of the same name that ruled the Korean peninsula between 1392 and 1897, is the first digital state to be officially recognised by a member of the United Nations.

That UN member? You guessed it: the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda, which established diplomatic relations with Joseon in a ceremony last June.

Indiana-born Mr Lee founded his cloud-based blockchain kingdom in March 2022, four years after he was named the presumptive ‘crown prince of Korea’ by a man named Yi Seok.

Yi Seok was the last direct descendant of the House of Yi, the final royal dynasty of Joseon, to still live in Korea – so the claim was at least vaguely legitimate.

If you’re struggling to follow (and who could blame you?) this Daily Beast article is a good place to start.

Anyway, the thing about Andrew Lee is that he doesn’t want to be the only monarch of a cyber state. Far from it: he wants everyone to be a monarch of their own cyber state.

And that includes… Meghan Markle.

Speaking in the third person – naturally – Mr Lee told the Daily Star: ‘The King of Joseon would recognise her as Queen of her own nation – whatever she calls it. She could call herself the Queen of England if she wanted and we’d recognise it.

‘It wouldn’t be the England that most people think of but it would be called England nevertheless.’

This would make her a ‘pioneer’, he says, encouraging other people to become the monarch of a personal digital country and ultimately achieving a ‘new world order’.

So there you have it. Meghan Markle, Judi Dench, Gregg Wallace, you and me – any of us could be the Queen of England if we feel like it.
