Messi’s name booed and whistled by PSG fans before match amid talk of Barcelona return appeared on talksport.com by Connor Andrews.
Lionel Messi’s name was booed by Paris Saint-Germain’s fans amid rumours he may be heading back to Barcelona.
Whistles and discontent rang out at Parc des Princes before kick-off when Messi’s name was announced in the line-up to face Lyon in Ligue 1.
That soon changed to cheers when Kylian Mbappe’s name was heard, suggesting big problems with Messi and his current side.
A journalist in attendance from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo recorded the reaction, and added: “The fracture with the stands is unquestionable at this stage of the season, increased by rumours of his possible return to Barcelona.”
Messi has long been linked with a return to what was his lifelong club ever since his teary farewell in 2021.
Financial restrictions on the Spanish giants saw their greatest ever player forced to leave, with PSG the victors as they took the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner on a free transfer.
Signing a two-year deal in the French capital, Messi’s future is still to be decided this summer, with claims he could stay at PSG, or even leave Europe for MLS side Inter Miami.
But links to Barca took off earlier in the week when the club’s vice president, Rafa Yuste, revealed he’s been in contact with the 35-year-old’s representatives.
“Leo and his family know the affection I have for them,” he said. “I participated in the [2021 contract] negotiations which unfortunately did not lead to a certain result.
“I’ve always had and I have this thorn in my side that Leo couldn’t continue at our club.
“Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I would love for him to come back. We’re in contact, of course, with them.”
The latest news looks to have irritated PSG fans, who likely lost some affection for Messi after he downed France in the 2022 World Cup final.
