Messi’s next door neighbour reveals what star’s life in Miami is really like appeared on talksport.com by Lee Davey.
Lionel Messi freely walks around his Miami neighbourhood because he thinks he’s just a regular guy.
That’s according to his neighbour, who lifted the lid on what life is like living next door to the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Messi swapped European football for a new adventure in MLS in 2023 and has quickly revamped Inter Miami’s fortunes from Eastern Conference strugglers to the cusp of their first MLS Cup, all in the space of 12 months.
His popularity has grown tenfold in the United States and with it, the MLS product.
Messi mania has attracted huge audiences on streaming platforms with MLS boasting viewing figures of over one million viewers for its biggest matches.
Messi’s neighbour, American businessman Patrick Bet-David, provided some insight into the Argentine’s day-to-day movements since his arrival in Florida.
“Yes Messi is my neighbour, I don’t think he knows how famous he is,” Bet-David said. “He sometimes just walks around like he is a regular guy. There are always people lined up around our community either wearing Inter Miami or Argentina jerseys and they are just waiting for him to come out.
“A lot of people get arrested because they try to sneak in and get a picture of him. He thinks he’s a regular guy and he’s in the argument for the greatest of all time.
“My kids, especially my son Dylan, always knock on the door until they open it.
“Messi told me after we met him after a match: ‘Oh, that’s the boy who was knocking on my door.’ For Me, Messi is the best ever”
“This guy trick or treats and walks around like he’s a regular neighbour. You’re Messi, you’re not a regular guy.”
Bet-David admits that many Americans still do not understand the global appeal football provides in the same way it is in other areas of the world.
However, comparing Messi’s personal brand to that of juggernaut Cristiano Ronaldo, Bet-David revealed the key attribute that gives the Portuguese the edge over the former Barcelona star.
“When you think of the most liked Instagram posts of all time, three out of the top five are Messi,” he added. “The other one out of the top five is Ronaldo.”
“Ronaldo is just so famous and attractive. If someone was Messi’s marketing manager, him not speaking English and doing interviews has cost him a lot of money.
“The moment Ronaldo realised he’s got to speak English and started doing interviews, he went straight to the top. The sponsorships he gets are very different to the sponsorships Messi gets.
“As much as I think Messi is the GOAT, not when it comes to my kids – it’s Ronaldo.
“The connection Ronaldo has made with young kids is very different to the connection Messi has made with kids.
“Messi’s connection is with older people. Ronaldo has a younger audience and ladies would much rather follow Ronaldo than Messi.”
