A Southwest Missouri community college has officially opened the largest building project in its history: a $40 million facility that aims to train the region’s future advanced manufacturing workforce.
Ozarks Technical Community College’s new, 120,000-square-foot Robert W. Plaster Center for Advanced Manufacturing will house seven of the college’s technical training programs, including automation and robotics, cybersecurity, drafting and design, information technology infrastructure, manufacturing technology, mechatronics, and precision machining.
Officials added that 15,000 square feet in the complex would be reserved for its industry partners, who would be able to train employees, create new equipment processes, conduct research and development, and conduct other company activities. DT Engineering, an industrial automation firm in Lebanon, Missouri, will become the first company to use the center later this year.
Ozarks Chancellor Hal Higdon said the center will attract business, hire talented graduates, and “educate the next generation of workers.”
The project was funded through a $0.05 property tax increase approved by voters in 2018, along with donations from individuals, companies, and institutions and more than $12 million in state funding. The college has estimated that the center will make a $400 million impact on the local economy over 10 years.
