Monica Lewinsky celebrates ‘Survivors Day’ 25 years after scandal appeared on www.washingtonexaminer.com by Paul Bedard.
Monica Lewinsky, the most famous White House intern ever, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the news breaking about her affair with former President Bill Clinton.
“Today I celebrate,” she tweeted on a graphic designed to look like a greeting card.

“It’s the 25th anniversary of SURVIVOR’S DAY — the scariest + most traumatic day of my life — when I was stung by the fbi + learned of the starr investigation that would lead to bill clinton’s impeachment. i was 24. THANK YOU to my family, friends, professionals, colleagues + people who supported me — especially pre-2014,” she wrote.
The scandal, which led to Clinton’s impeachment (but not his conviction) in the Senate, was revealed online on Jan. 17, 1998, by the Drudge Report. That story claimed that Newsweek was sitting on a story about the affair.
On his blog The Focus with Mark Hyman, journalist Mark Hyman detailed the scandal that consumed the nation 25 years ago.
“For nearly two years, Clinton and Lewinsky met in person dozens of times. On at least ten occasions when they were alone, they engaged in sexual activity, usually in the windowless hallway just outside the president’s private study. The sexual activity mostly consisted of Lewinsky performing oral sex on the president. On other occasions when they were apart, they engaged in phone sex,” he recalled.
The website onmanorama.com, writing about the anniversary, said that Lewinsky fell out of sight after the news coverage cooled but was drawn out by nasty comments about her from Hillary Rodham Clinton. That led her to lead an anti-bullying campaign cheered by many.

“She had largely dropped from sight after the scandal died out but her name resurfaced in U.S. political discourse in February 2014, when former first lady and then Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton was quoted as calling her a ‘narcissistic looney-tune’ in an article.
“Then, Lewinsky broke her long silence in an article for Vanity Fair magazine, in which she said she deeply regretted what had happened and was ‘determined to have a different ending’ to her story,” said onmanorama.com.
