Montclair Artist’s Work Makes Its Way To President Bill Clinton‘s Harlem Office appeared on baristanet.com by Baristanet.
Montclair, NJ – Liz Murphy, a Montclair-based abstract artist, was selected to showcase three of her paintings in the offices of President Bill Clinton in Harlem. Heather Carter of Carter Fine Art Services, who sources and curates art for the office, facilitated this arrangement.
“I had the opportunity to meet and chat with President Clinton Tuesday about his love of art. It was thrilling to see my two pieces hung in the main foyer. They are muted and subtle, offering a gentle warm welcome to employees and visitors who arrive at these prestigious offices. Helen Robinson, his Director of Administration, proudly showed me the wide range of eclectic styles, both sculptural, and two dimensional, adorning each of the offices,” says Murphy.
When Murphy first saw Clinton, he was surrounded by Secret Service.
“He greeted me with a warm handshake and a huge smile. I was advised that our time together would be limited as he was on a tight schedule, but once he started chatting, it was as if there was nothing stopping him. He shared his favorite artists and stories from his childhood,” says Murphy. “I asked if he ever painted, and he said he is left-handed and later suffered from a condition that makes his hands shake. He joked how that might have helped his style.”
Murphy says Robinson, director of administration at the Clinton Foundation, who has been working with the President for over 40 years, also shared stories of the many dignitaries and important figures who have visited the office, including Nelson Mandela.
Murphy says of Clinton: “His memory for detail was staggering. It is a real honor to not only have my art on display, but to have the opportunity to spend time with this man who has made major contributions not only to the political landscape, but the world at large.”
