Morgan McGarvey, Mitch McConnell on Joe Biden’s State of the Union appeared on www.courier-journal.com by Morgan Watkins.
U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey went to his first State of the Union address Tuesday ? an experience he called “incredible,” as President Joe Biden spoke to a room filled with freshman lawmakers like him as well as high-level officials (including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was underwhelmed by the speech).
“You don’t want to be cheesy about something like this,” said McGarvey, whom Louisville elected in November to succeed retired Rep. John Yarmuth. “It was an incredible moment to sit on the floor of the United States House of Representatives with my colleagues from the House, the members of the Senate, the Supreme Court justices, the members of the cabinet, and the president addressing the nation and the Congress about how our country’s doing.”
“Coming off one of the most productive congresses in decades, it was an opportunity, I think, to remind legislators what government can accomplish when we work together to make things better for the American people,” he told The Courier Journal on Wednesday. “People are always cynical. I am not cynical this morning.”

McGarvey ? who brought his father, John, as his guest Tuesday night ? praised the core message of Biden’s annual address, which he summed up as: The state of the union is strong, but we still have work to do and progress to make.
The Louisville Democrat’s Republican colleagues from Kentucky had a different take on the president’s 72-minute speech.
McConnell argued Biden’s view of the country’s circumstances diverges from most Americans’ perspectives and cited concerns about the U.S.-Mexico border and inflation.
“It’s no wonder the American people are dissatisfied,” he said in a statement. “The president did the best that he could do to try to convince people otherwise. I think it was largely a failed effort.”
U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, whose district includes part of Jefferson County after last year’s redistricting, similarly said America faces various crises. He expressed high hopes for what the GOP can accomplish since it controls the House again and can check Democratic power in the White House and the Senate.
“The true State of the Union is that our country is facing crisis after crisis under President Biden’s leadership,” Guthrie said in a statement. “I hope during the rest of President Biden’s term he chooses to work with House Republicans on getting inflation under control, regaining control of the border and unleashing American-made energy.”
Sen. Rand Paul also criticized Biden’s speech, especially its economic aspects. (Biden highlighted the country’s record-low unemployment rate of 3.4%, among other things.)
“President Biden congratulates himself for new jobs – Americans know that many of those were their second or third jobs struggling to pay for gas and food,” Paul tweeted. “He brags about economic growth, but Americans are looking down at the interest on mortgages and cars, and their higher bills.”
Paul contended that the first half of Biden’s four-year term has been a “failure for Americans” but said he remains hopeful and will keep fighting for a brighter future.
