Most Americans strongly oppose abortion ban, ABC poll says
ABC revealed poll results related to the top issues heading into the midterms, including President Joe Biden’s performance, the economy, inflation and reproductive rights.
Their latest ABC News/Washington Post survey found “broad opposition” to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling eliminating a constitutional right to abortion, creating “a big Democratic advantage in trust to handle the issue.”
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.
“Americans broadly reject the U.S. Supreme Court ruling eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion — 29% support it, with 64% opposed,” the ABC story says, noting 53% strongly oppose it, compared with 21% strongly in support.
The results also show the public trusts Democrats over Republicans to handle abortion by 20 points. “In another measure, while 31% say the Democratic Party is too permissive on abortion, many more, 50%, say the GOP is too restrictive,” the story says.
The poll also included Biden’s approval rating, which is currently 39%, while 53% disapprove. The results even show a clear majority of Democrats want the the party to replace Biden as its nominee for president in 2024. But former President Donald Trump’s popularity has also waned among his own party, with Republicans and GOP-leaning independents split 47%-46% on whether he should be their 2024 nominee.
