Victor’s experience
As per the reports of Yahoo news, Victor, a 37-year-old Atlanta, Georgia resident, talked about how shocked he was to see strange pimples on his face in August 2022. His skin was usually clear, so at first he assumed the dots were pimples. But soon, he started to get more lesions, which prompted him to get emergency care. He believed that the person he had kissed recently was the cause of his sickness.
After being checked and placed into quarantine, Victor’s mpox diagnosis was eventually confirmed. Severe symptoms of the illness included headaches, fever, and swollen tonsils. By the second week, Victor’s face was swollen and his throat felt like it was shutting up, making it difficult for him to eat or sleep. His life was seriously threatened by the cellulitis that resulted from the lesions being infected.
Tristan’s journey
Tristan, a 31-year-old from London, experienced less obvious initial symptoms. While attending the Eurovision final in Turin, he felt unusually tired and had lower back pain, attributing it to the holiday activities. After returning to London, he noticed a few spots on his intimate areas, which he initially thought were related to an STI.

Despite using protection, Tristan’s symptoms worsened, prompting him to visit a hospital. There, he was diagnosed with mpox and observed the medical staff don hazmat suits, a response influenced by recent Covid-19 protocols. He was placed in isolation but did not receive specific antiviral treatment, as his case was not severe enough. He only experienced mild lesions, and by the time he was isolated, his condition had improved.
Tom’s struggle
Tom, a 25-year-old from Atlanta, faced symptoms mainly affecting his face and mouth. He believed he contracted mpox from a three-way kiss at a gay bathhouse. His initial symptom was a bump above his lip, which later developed into painful lesions on his tongue. The pain was intense, causing him to cry frequently. Eating and drinking were difficult, leading him to rely on smoothies and apple sauce. Also Read : ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 6: What to expect and will final chapter be connected to Testaments?
Tom was advised to manage his symptoms with over-the-counter painkillers and was monitored via remote check-ins. His recovery involved waiting for the lesions to scar over to avoid spreading the virus. Despite fully recovering, Tom reported ongoing anxiety about possible future outbreaks.
